Gameday Preview: Game 39 Phillies at Cubs

The Phillies are a .500 baseball team yet again, it feels so great to say that after all of the struggles this team has endured to start this 2012 baseball season, they look to continue this four game winning streak tonight in Chicago against the Cubs, first pitch around 8:05 Pm EST.

This is the final game of this two game road trip, the Phillies board a plane for Philadelphia after tonight’s game and began a three game interleague series against the Boston Red Sox tomorrow night at beautiful Citizens Bank Park.

Roy Halladay will take the mound for the Phillies today, he has a record of 3-3 on the season and a 3.20 ERA. In Halladay’s last five outings he has either been charged with a loss or a no decision. I really don’t think that has happened in his career before, maybe his first year in the league but if anybody has that stat please let me know in the comment section cause i’m interested to see if this has ever happen before, I really don’t think it has but what do I know.

The Cubs send out Chris Volstad tonight, I always love facing pitchers like this because he really basically sucks, I’m not going to sugar coat it because he just completely sucks. He is 0-5 on the season and has an ERA of 6.92, a very lovely candidate to face.

I saw an interesting stat on twitter from somewhere today where the Phillies have a .500 record at home, .500 record on the road and a .500 record on the season.

If the Phillies record a victory tonight the Phillies will be one game over .500 for the first time since opening day in Pittsburgh.

Weather at game time tonight.  Last time Halladay pitched in Chicago it was a warm 90 degrees and he left the game early because of the terrible Chicago Heat.

Gameday Preview: Game 38 Phillies at Cubs

The Phillies look to continue this nice refreshing winning streak tonight in Chicago against the Cubs at 8:05 Pm EST.

Don’t look now but the Phillies only find themselves five games out of first place.

Vance Worley was supposed to start this evening but he did not even make the trip with team to Chicago because of elbow soreness so we get the lovely opportunity to see Kyle Kendrick pitch tonight. Just shoot me now.

Vance Worley has been put on the 15 day disabled list because of elbow inflammation.

Kyle Kendrick is 0-3 on the season and has an ERA of 7.32 which is just horrid. I cringe every time I see Kendrick take the hill so this should be a really fun night. So just prepare for some upcoming losses with Kendrick on the mound.

Matt Garza who is the only Cubs pitcher worth a penny will pitch tonight, he is 2-1 on the season and has an ERA of 2.56. The first time the Phillies faced him this year at Citizens Bank Park they were shutout and could only muster up one hit, ten Phillies hitters struck out that night in what was a pretty feeble effort.

This Cubs lineup is just piss poor from top down, Chad Qualls could probably get these hitters out.

Let’s hope Chad Qualls is not used tonight but he probably will be so I should just hide all of the breakable objects in my house right now.

Weather at game time tonight in the windy city.

Gameday Preview: Game 37 Phillies vs Astros

The Philadelphia Phillies finish the series against the Houston Astros this afternoon at 1:05 Pm EST. After today’s game the Phillies take a two-day vacation to Chicago to play the Cubs.

These next three games for the Phillies are very important because they are playing very sub par ball clubs and need to secure wins against teams like these.

Cliff Lee will make his second start this afternoon since coming off of the disabled list. Cliff Lee again will search for his first win on the season this afternoon. Even though Lee doesn’t have a win he sure has pitch well enough to have one as he has a 2.17 ERA on the season.

It is very unlikely we even play this game today as you see the weather report down below but let’s hope for the best.

Phillies win 5-1, Polanco Reaches Milestone

This was a battle between two very bad teams, the sea of empty blue seats at first pitch was a result of these teams combined suckness so far this season.

These next four games for the Phillies are almost must win games because they are playing the Astros and Cubs. Both teams do not have a lot going for them so the Phillies need to pick up some victories.

The offense did well tonight, however the first four innings it would have seemed we were facing a Cy Young out there, pitching did very well tonight. But we were facing the Astros so don’t get to excited.

The Phillies were able to push across the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning off of a Freddy Galvis RBI single, both offenses were sputtering until the Phillies were actually able to get people on base in that inning. The Phillies had the bases loaded with two outs in the inning but Juan Pierre was up and we all know how that ended.

While the rain continued misting over Citizens Bank Park Carlos Ruiz singled home Shane Victorino in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.

The Phillies were not done in the sixth, Freddy Galvis singled home another run in the  inning to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead. Galvis was the offensive spark plug tonight.

Placido Polanco reached the 2,000 mark in hits tonight and did it in grand style. Polanco hit a two run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to capture this milestone.

Joe Blanton pitched a pretty great game tonight against a pretty horrid Houston Astros offense. Blanton allowed one run off of six hits tonight in his seven innings of work.

Bastardo and Qualls together got the Phillies through the eighth inning without allowing any more runs and that set it up for the billion dollar reliever.

Papelbon pitched a clean ninth inning and the Phillies are only two game under .500 now.

Phillies next game is tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 Pm EST. After tomorrow’s game against the Houston Astros the Phillies will head to Chicago to play the Cubs for two games and then return to Citizens Bank Park Friday for a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox. This Schedule is little loopy this week, someone must have been a little tipsy when they were writing this weeks schedule.

Gameday Preview: Game 36 Phillies vs Astros

The Philadelphia Phillies begin a two game quick series against the Houston Astros tonight at Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia, first pitch around 7:05 Pm EST.

It was nice to see the Phillies edge on the Padres yesterday to pick up the win and win the series on Mother’s Day. Yesterday was the final time the Phillies and Padres will meet this season.

Joe Blanton will toe the rubber for the Phillies tonight, he comes into tonight with a 3-3 record and a respectable 3.24 ERA. Blanton allowed four runs off of five hits in his last outing against the New York Mets, he wound up with a no decision as the bullpen blew the ball game.

Phillies bats will face righty Lucas Harrel, he has a record of 2-2 and an ERA of 4.58 so far in this young season.

Placido Polanco will again go for his 2,000th hit tonight, he bats sixth tonight.

Weather at game time tonight.

Gameday Preview: Game 35 Phillies vs Padres

Happy Mother’s Day.

We roll out the pink equipment this afternoon so hopefully these pink bats can help the offense pick up some runs, and maybe just maybe stop Hunter Pence from swinging at every single pitch. I never seen a more inpatient hitter at the plate then Hunter Pence

This is the final game of this three game series against the San Diego Padres, first pitch around 1:35 Pm EST.

Cole Hamels will start his first game since his little incident with Bryce Harper that landed Hamels a five game suspension.

Gameday Preview: Game 34 Phillies vs Padres

I guess the key to the Phillies victories is me not watching the games, so someone come into my house and please take all of the tv’s out of my house.

Just for your information I will not be able to watch tonight’s game so the Phillies will win again.

Okay enough of that stupidity

The Phillies look to win game two of this three game series tonight at 7:05 Pm EST against the San Diego Padres.

Last night featured some offense and the bullpen for once did not blow the freaking game, it’s a miracle. The bullpen was able to pitch three scoreless innings in relief of Vance Worley who got hit just a tad bit last night. I really thought that our bullpen could never be able to throw three scoreless innings but they somehow pulled a rabbit out of their ass and worked some magic.

Roy Halladay will take the hill for the Phillies this evening, Halladay has had some rough outings as of late and it really is saddening me. Doc has received a no decision in his past two outings, has that ever happen before? I don’t recall Halladay having two no decisions in a row since joining the Phillies until now.

Edinson Volquez will start for the Padres.

Since Velocity has been a big storyline this year for Halladay here is his velocity in the past years.

The Phillies have made more roster moves. Mike Fontenot has been called up to the big club. There has been a ton of roster moves this week and my small brain is beginning to hurt because of it.

This game will be televised on CSN, 1210 WPHT for radio.

Weather at game time tonight in South Philadelphia.

The Phillies Can Win and more Roster Moves

It feels real good, is this what victories feel like?  I wouldn’t know it has seemed like forever since I heard high hopes in the background and see the Phillies players patting each other on the ass. Yes I had to put that image in your mind.

I’m really glad the lovely San Diego Padres who are awful were able to come into town this weekend so we can hopefully pick up some victories. This is the perfect team to try to regroup after a brutal sweep from the New York Mets.

Now I did not watch the game very closely because I had some other matters to attend to but it seemed like it was a comfortable win, the bullpen came out there and did their job thankfully for once. Antonio Bastardo still looks a little shaky, he was able to pitch two scoreless innings but the part a saw was him throwing a lot of pitches out of the strike zone. These pitches were wild and not even close to the zone, thankfully we are facing the minor league San Diego Padres and they were hacking at these pitches out of the zone. What has happen to Bastardo? Last year he just did not seem like he had this wild problem, maybe this is just me.

The offense continued to push across runs, Carlos Ruiz continues to be the MVP of this ball club. Ruiz hit his sixth big fly of the year. John Mayberry Jr. is finally making great contact at the plate, he belted his first home run of the season tonight.

Slowly but surely everything on the offensive side of the ball is beginning to click, is this just because they are playing the pathetic San Diego Padres? It probably is but hopefully they can continue to have these hot bats when they face great pitching and elite teams. Maybe gain some offensive momentum while playing these less elite ball clubs.

In the past four games the offense is showing great consistency, even getting swept by the Mets the offense was still doing very well in the series, the bullpen a different story. But the bullpen tonight was exceptional.

Chad Qualls who I have despised the most out of the bullpen pitched a clean inning tonight to my delight. I still cringed when he took the mound.

Vance Worley was able to pick up his third win of the season tonight at Citizens Bank Park, he was hit around a little and his ERA shot up to 3.07 by the end of his outing but the offense was able to back their comrade up. Something the offense has not be able to do earlier in the season.

Phillies look to take the first two games of this series tomorrow night at 7:05 Pm EST.

These chain of events happened after today’s game.

There has been a lot of roster moves over the past couple of days, starting to confuse my little brain.

Gameday Preview: Game 33 Phillies vs Padres

The Philadelphia Phillies look to end this three game losing streak tonight at Citizens Bank Park against the San Diego Padres, first pitch around 7:05 Pm EST

The Padres come into Philadelphia tonight with a horrible record as usual, the Padres currently sit last in the horrible National League East with a record of 11-21.

The last time these teams met a month ago the Phillies could only take two games out of the four game series. It was very frustrating because the Padres suck and I was at all four of those games. It would really be wonderful and very possible for the Phillies to sweep the Padres this weekend but I think I’m retiring from predicting this Phillies season because I have been very wrong thus far.

Vance Worley will take the hill for the Phillies tonight, Worley is 2-2 on the season and has an ERA of 2.84 so far. He allowed 11 hits to the Nationals in his last outing which resulted in a loss. The last time Vance Worley faced the Padres was April 19th and he had a career high eleven strikeouts that night in San Diego, went seven innings that night and did not allow a run. The bullpen did not blow the game that night so he did receive a win for his great effort.

Clayton Richard will toe the rubber for the Padres this evening, his season thus far has been pretty horrid. He has a record of 1-4 on the season and a 4.89 ERA so far.

Here is Clayton Richard’s fastball heat maps so far this season. These maps represent where a  pitcher threw a particular type of pitch the most often.

The Phillies made some roster moves, Michael Schwimer was the first to report it yesterday via his twitter. The day in age where players break the stories before the actually team.

Weather at game time tonight.

Pull out the Patron Bottle

Another night another bullpen loss. The Phillies get swept at home by the New York Mets.

Bullpen ignites a 10-6 loss to the Mets

Cliff Lee was back out on the mound tonight for the Phillies for the first time since April 18th. The first time he has pitched since pitching ten scoreless innings and receiving a no decision in San Francisco.

Lee helped his own cause in the bottom of the second inning as he hustled down the first base line to beat the throw from shortstop Justin Turner, Brian Schneider who was catching Lee tonight scored on the play.

Once again the Phillies pushed across the first run of the game, that has not turned into wins for the Phillies so far this season, it didn’t tonight.

The Mets answered right back in the top of the third inning, scoring one run off of a Daniel Murphy double to left field, Lee was able to work out of the jam and not allow anymore runs. Very important to limit the runs because this Phillies offense has an issue of scoring when it gets late into games.

Freddy Galvis hit a little weak ground out to second base to give the Phillies 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. I will take runs anyway I can’t possibly get them at this point. That little ground out to second gave Galvis his ninth RBI on the season.

In the top of the sixth inning I about lost my mind, Shane Victorino dove for a ball and missed it, that allowed Andres Torris to get all the way to third base on the play. Two batters later David Wright blooped a little single to centerfield to tie it up two. The Phillies did the worst thing possible which was going to the bullpen. They had there torches ready and they were ready to ignite a loss.

Cliff Lee was done after six innings of work, Lee was on a pitch count because this is his first start since being taken off of the disabled list. Lee allowed two runs off of five hits in his return to the rotation.

Freddy Galvis saved the day in the bottom of the sixth (at the time), Galvis came within inches off hitting his second home run of the season but the ball banged off of the top of the left field wall, nonetheless the Phillies were able to regain the lead on that play. Laynce Nix pinch hit for Lee in the inning and he blooped a little single to centerfield that scored Freddy Galvis from second base.

At this point in time I was cheering for rain to come pour down on Citizens Bank Park so the Phillies didn’t have to go to the bullpen.

But the rain did not come fast enough and we went off on the bullpen adventure once again.

Kyle Kendrick was the first lovely reliever we had to witness in the top of the seventh inning. Guess what happen? He blew the lead.

Contreras would come in later and blow the game even more.

I really can’t comprehend want I witnessed tonight, why after blowing the game in the seventh inning was Kyle Kendrick pitching in the beginning of the eighth.

The bullpen blows and there is really nothing positive about this team right now.

The Phillies have tomorrow off and then begin a three game series against the San Diego Padres on Friday. We need this day off just to relax for once.

Other Notes

Chase Utley participated in batting practice before today’s game at Citizens Bank Park. Here is what Utley had to say.

Joe Savery was optioned to triple a after the game, move to be made on Friday.

Charlie Manuel had a team meeting after the game.
