Gameday Preview: Game 39 Phillies at Cubs

The Phillies are a .500 baseball team yet again, it feels so great to say that after all of the struggles this team has endured to start this 2012 baseball season, they look to continue this four game winning streak tonight in Chicago against the Cubs, first pitch around 8:05 Pm EST.

This is the final game of this two game road trip, the Phillies board a plane for Philadelphia after tonight’s game and began a three game interleague series against the Boston Red Sox tomorrow night at beautiful Citizens Bank Park.

Roy Halladay will take the mound for the Phillies today, he has a record of 3-3 on the season and a 3.20 ERA. In Halladay’s last five outings he has either been charged with a loss or a no decision. I really don’t think that has happened in his career before, maybe his first year in the league but if anybody has that stat please let me know in the comment section cause i’m interested to see if this has ever happen before, I really don’t think it has but what do I know.

The Cubs send out Chris Volstad tonight, I always love facing pitchers like this because he really basically sucks, I’m not going to sugar coat it because he just completely sucks. He is 0-5 on the season and has an ERA of 6.92, a very lovely candidate to face.

I saw an interesting stat on twitter from somewhere today where the Phillies have a .500 record at home, .500 record on the road and a .500 record on the season.

If the Phillies record a victory tonight the Phillies will be one game over .500 for the first time since opening day in Pittsburgh.

Weather at game time tonight.  Last time Halladay pitched in Chicago it was a warm 90 degrees and he left the game early because of the terrible Chicago Heat.

Back to .500

The Phillies explode with nine runs tonight and now are back to .500 baseball on the season with this 9-2 win tonight over the Cubs.

Freddy Galvis started the offensive production tonight when he batted home his 16th RBI on the year in the top of the second inning to give the Phillies and Kyle Kendrick a 1-0 lead to work with.

Phillies could have added some much-needed runs in the top of the third inning but Carlos Ruiz who has been the most consistent offensive bat for the Phillies so far this season grounded into a 6-3 twin killing double play to end the one out bases loaded rally. This team continues to fail with runners in scoring position.

Those stranded runners would not come back to haunt them tonight.

After Juan Pierre lost a ball in the Chicago night sky and Kyle Kendrick gifted Alfonso Soriano with a pitch down the middle the Cubs took a 2-1 lead. How do you give up a home run to the washed up Alfonso Soriano?

Those would be the only runs the Cubs would score tonight.

I get nervous every time someone makes contact with a Kyle Kendrick pitch as of late because they are just floating up there on a tee waiting to get crushed.

The Phillies would tie it up in the next inning off of a weak little ground out that scored Kyle Kendrick from third base. Kendrick was able to earn his first hit of the season tonight and  even scored. He does everything, hit, score, and gives up runs.

I guess since Kyle Kendrick pitched very well tonight I can’t rag on him till his next performance, Kendrick pitched six innings and gave up two runs off of three hits, he was only charged with one run because Pierre can’t catch out in left field.

Kendrick however would not chalk up a win tonight but he sure pitched well tonight.

Mr. MVP himself Carlos Ruiz broke the 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth inning as he crushed his 7th big fly of the season.

Phillies added a ton of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to pretty much secure the fourth win in a row, the longest winning streak of the season continues.

Hector Luna really blew the game open in the inning with his first career grand slam to send the Cubs fans to the exits.

Bullpen did not allow a run tonight.

The Phillies conclude this short two game road trip tomorrow night at 8:05 Pm EST in Chicago against the Cubs. Roy Halladay will toe the rubber for the Phillies tomorrow night before the Phillies head home to begin a three game series against the Boston Red Sox.

Some Other Notes

Vance Worley who was put on the 15 day disabled list earlier this afternoon due to right elbow pain was examined this afternoon and there was no structural damage to that elbow thank goodness. No real timetable on his return to the starting rotation.

Chase Utley came back to life today and fielded some ground balls for the first time since rejoining the team May 5th.

Placido Polanco left tonight’s game with a bruised left knee.

Frustrating Game Ends Well for the Phils

Hunter Pence and the Phillies walk off with a 4-3 victory after blowing Cliff Lee’s great pitching performance in the ninth.

It was a rainy ugly grey morning as we moved closer to first pitch in South Philadelphia but with about an hour till game time the tarp was rolled off the field and they started to prepare it for some afternoon baseball.

The game started right on time despite meteorologists saying it was going to be pouring at this time. How do you get a meteorologist job? Would sure be easy to be wrong all of the time, I’m already a professional at being wrong.

Right off the bat this team frustrated me today and it was really to early out here on the west coast to be filled with rage, the Phillies tried to use small ball in the first inning to score a run but it backfired in their face and they got nada. You just have to love bunting with no outs when Jimmy Rollins is already in scoring position. What respectable team does that?

Phillies decided to use long ball in the next inning and it really worked a lot better, shockerino.

Brian Schneider did something he does not do to often in the bottom of the second inning, he hit a hit a two run home run to right field to give the Phillies an early 2-0 lead. The first home run for Schneider since April 21st of last year.

Hunter Pence added on to his home run total with an opposite field big fly to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, his eighth on the season.

Offense finally gave Cliff Lee some runs to work with today, something that has not happened in his prior starts.

Cliff Lee pitched like Cliff Lee normally does on a daily basis today, getting strikeouts, getting outs, and working fast. The only mistake Lee made on the day was a fastball down the middle to Matt Jones who crushed it to left field.

Lee went eight innings today and only allowed one run off of five hits. But gets a no decision because the bullpen sucks basically.

Jonathan Papelbon was not available today because he’s has pitched the last three days, Chad Qualls pitched the ninth instead.

Qualls can never pitch a relaxing inning, he allowed a run and Hunter Pence botched a play in right to blow his victory. Cliff Lee should get a free kick on Chad Qualls.

Qualls could not finish the inning and the Phillies brought out Jake Diekman to get the final out in the inning in his MLB debut, he did just that and stranded runners on second and third.

Diekman came back out to pitch the tenth inning and did an outstanding job.

This was the final time the Houston Astros played in Philadelphia as a National League club. I did not realize this before today. This really sucks because I always loved playing the Astros because they are horrid and we can usually beat them.

222nd sellout in a row today at Citizens Bank Park.

Phillies next game is tomorrow night at 8:05 Pm EST in Chicago against the Cubs.

Phillies win 5-1, Polanco Reaches Milestone

This was a battle between two very bad teams, the sea of empty blue seats at first pitch was a result of these teams combined suckness so far this season.

These next four games for the Phillies are almost must win games because they are playing the Astros and Cubs. Both teams do not have a lot going for them so the Phillies need to pick up some victories.

The offense did well tonight, however the first four innings it would have seemed we were facing a Cy Young out there, pitching did very well tonight. But we were facing the Astros so don’t get to excited.

The Phillies were able to push across the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning off of a Freddy Galvis RBI single, both offenses were sputtering until the Phillies were actually able to get people on base in that inning. The Phillies had the bases loaded with two outs in the inning but Juan Pierre was up and we all know how that ended.

While the rain continued misting over Citizens Bank Park Carlos Ruiz singled home Shane Victorino in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.

The Phillies were not done in the sixth, Freddy Galvis singled home another run in the  inning to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead. Galvis was the offensive spark plug tonight.

Placido Polanco reached the 2,000 mark in hits tonight and did it in grand style. Polanco hit a two run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to capture this milestone.

Joe Blanton pitched a pretty great game tonight against a pretty horrid Houston Astros offense. Blanton allowed one run off of six hits tonight in his seven innings of work.

Bastardo and Qualls together got the Phillies through the eighth inning without allowing any more runs and that set it up for the billion dollar reliever.

Papelbon pitched a clean ninth inning and the Phillies are only two game under .500 now.

Phillies next game is tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 Pm EST. After tomorrow’s game against the Houston Astros the Phillies will head to Chicago to play the Cubs for two games and then return to Citizens Bank Park Friday for a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox. This Schedule is little loopy this week, someone must have been a little tipsy when they were writing this weeks schedule.

Gameday Preview: Game 36 Phillies vs Astros

The Philadelphia Phillies begin a two game quick series against the Houston Astros tonight at Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia, first pitch around 7:05 Pm EST.

It was nice to see the Phillies edge on the Padres yesterday to pick up the win and win the series on Mother’s Day. Yesterday was the final time the Phillies and Padres will meet this season.

Joe Blanton will toe the rubber for the Phillies tonight, he comes into tonight with a 3-3 record and a respectable 3.24 ERA. Blanton allowed four runs off of five hits in his last outing against the New York Mets, he wound up with a no decision as the bullpen blew the ball game.

Phillies bats will face righty Lucas Harrel, he has a record of 2-2 and an ERA of 4.58 so far in this young season.

Placido Polanco will again go for his 2,000th hit tonight, he bats sixth tonight.

Weather at game time tonight.

Gameday Preview: Game 35 Phillies vs Padres

Happy Mother’s Day.

We roll out the pink equipment this afternoon so hopefully these pink bats can help the offense pick up some runs, and maybe just maybe stop Hunter Pence from swinging at every single pitch. I never seen a more inpatient hitter at the plate then Hunter Pence

This is the final game of this three game series against the San Diego Padres, first pitch around 1:35 Pm EST.

Cole Hamels will start his first game since his little incident with Bryce Harper that landed Hamels a five game suspension.

Gameday Preview: Game 34 Phillies vs Padres

I guess the key to the Phillies victories is me not watching the games, so someone come into my house and please take all of the tv’s out of my house.

Just for your information I will not be able to watch tonight’s game so the Phillies will win again.

Okay enough of that stupidity

The Phillies look to win game two of this three game series tonight at 7:05 Pm EST against the San Diego Padres.

Last night featured some offense and the bullpen for once did not blow the freaking game, it’s a miracle. The bullpen was able to pitch three scoreless innings in relief of Vance Worley who got hit just a tad bit last night. I really thought that our bullpen could never be able to throw three scoreless innings but they somehow pulled a rabbit out of their ass and worked some magic.

Roy Halladay will take the hill for the Phillies this evening, Halladay has had some rough outings as of late and it really is saddening me. Doc has received a no decision in his past two outings, has that ever happen before? I don’t recall Halladay having two no decisions in a row since joining the Phillies until now.

Edinson Volquez will start for the Padres.

Since Velocity has been a big storyline this year for Halladay here is his velocity in the past years.

The Phillies have made more roster moves. Mike Fontenot has been called up to the big club. There has been a ton of roster moves this week and my small brain is beginning to hurt because of it.

This game will be televised on CSN, 1210 WPHT for radio.

Weather at game time tonight in South Philadelphia.

What’s the Problemo?

Why do the Phillies suck so much right now? Is it the bullpen? Is it the offense? Is it aging players? Is it the injuries that have plagued the team so far this season? Or is it a combination of a few of these things or a combination of all of them?

It has been an ugly season thus far and last night may have been the worst Phillies game I have  ever witnessed. Last nights game followed the script of games earlier in the season, Phillies score first, the starter pitches a great game, in the end the bullpen blows the game and washes away the win we once had and leaves us with a bitter taste in are mouth or a bunch of empty bottles of rum.

I really hope the problem with this Phillies team is the injuries of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, but the more I watch this team I just really think the bullpen is likely the culprit of all of this pain. This may be the worst bullpen in the major leagues, as of right now they have the worst ERA in the league. When you pay a closer 50 billion dollars you have to use him, but the bullpen is blowing the games before we can ever get to Jonathan Papelbon. I really hope we can find someone who can get us through the seventh and eighth innings very quickly because we are just blowing games right and left as of right now, hopefully we find someone in our farm system that can just dominate (highly unlikely). The offense has its problems at times pushing across runs, especially late in these ball games but the bullpen is blowing these games and the offense as no chance to even score runs. Even if the Phillies pulled out to a 6 nothing lead I would not be confident at all.

I love seeing a guy that we paid 50 billion dollars just sitting in the bullpen as we blow three run leads, we have to get through these seventh and eighth innings or this season is just a waste. This bullpen is not even facing offensive powerhouses like the New York Yankees or the Texas Rangers. They have blown these games against the Mets, the Mets suck plain and simple.

It’s just really sad to see Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels pitch incredible games only to get washed away because of the amateur bullpen we have out there. Why would Cole Hamels want to resign with the Phillies if the bullpen can’t back up his awesome games? I sure wouldn’t if I was him, Hamels gives up one run through seven innings only to have his win taken away because the bullpen is a complete utter disaster.

I really hope Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. works his magic at the trade deadline again like he has done in the past. We need a setup guy or at least a pitcher that is able to produce outs, if we don’t have that expect us to not even make the playoffs. With what I’m watching right now I’m preparing myself for the Phillies not even making the playoffs, even with the commissioner making more spots for teams to make into the playoffs the Phillies will not make it with the product they are putting on the field right now. The problem is who do we even have that is tradeable?

Even when Ryan Howard and Chase Utley come back we still have major issues, Howard and Utley will likely never be the same player. It’s very depressing typing that but there are just never going to be the same. Chase Utley is going to have these knee problems the rest of his career and Howard is not getting any younger right now. I really just started to shed a tear typing that statement but it’s a reality. It’s a very sad reality.

I will throw in a positive note in here because this so far has been very negative, once Chase Utley and Ryan Howard are plugged back in lineup this team is better, much much very much better. Gosh if we didn’t have Howard and Utley looming on the horizon this could be a really horrid season.

One more positive note is that the offense has actually hit over this past series, everyone was complaining about the lack of offense which everybody was right about that. But now all of that complaining has shifted to the bullpen, offense starts hitting and the bullpen starts blowing. Go Figure!

Last year right at this time everybody was expecting the Phillies to win the world series, a year later the Phillies have a record of 14-18 and sit dead last in the National League East Standings. What a difference a year makes.

I remember being ecstatic last year at this time a year ago, now I’m frustrated to the limit of my head exploding.

The season is not over just yet, but it’s not looking good as of right now.

What is the problem with this Phillies team, feel free to email me or leave a comment in the section down below on your opinion of what is the culprit of the Phillies problems as of right now.

Is this season doomed?

Gameday Preview: Game 32 Phillies vs Mets, Still Sane

Happy Wednesday, everybody have a good evening.

After last nights blunder of a loss where the Phillies blew a 4-0 lead and could not push across any runs late in the game are right back at it tonight against the Mets, this is the series finale and first pitch is around 7:05 Pm EST. The Phillies are about to get swept by the Mets, just ponder that for a second.

I really don’t have the actually stats sitting in front of me but the Phillies bullpen has blown at least eight games this year, the pitcher I thought that would never blow game blew a game on monday and that was Jonathan Papelbon. I never thought the billion dollar closer would give up a home run to a guy that has never even had a hit in the major leagues. It’s like just pick your poison out there in the bullpen. The poison last night was Chad Qualls,  the first batter he faced the Mets tied it up after the worst rundown I have ever seen in my life.

Cliff Lee will toe the rubber for the Phillies tonight, the first time since April 18th.  In that game Cliff Lee pitched ten scoreless innings and the Phillies still lost the game, just nauseating. That has been the story of the season, nauseating.

To make room to activate Cliff Lee the Phillies sent Michael Schwimer down to triple A this afternoon. Schwimer had an 8.53 ERA in five appearances with the Phillies.

Guys you need to drink to watch the Phillies this season.

Dillon Gee will pitch for the Mets tonight, Gee is 2-2 on the season. He received a no decision his last time out against Arizona.

So if the Phillies get out to the early lead tonight I fully expect them to blow the game late, I know I sound negative but how could you be positive right now. My head is slowly exploding.

We just need Ryan Howard and Chase Utley back on this team.

Go Phillies!

Phillies Lineup (14-17)

1. Rollins SS

Phillies lose 7-4, Close all Bridges

Baseball is just one frustrating sport, actually make that all of sports. Phillies blow the 4-0 lead they once had and lose 7-4 to the Mets. Drink drink drink drink the night away.

It was a crazy sports day around the Philadelphia area tonight, the Flyers were playing a few feet away from Citizens Bank Park where the Phillies were playing the New York Mets, and the 76ers were playing so this meant if you are a Philly sports fan you were either drunk or having heart attacks tonight.

The Phillies yet again got out to the early lead off of two run home run from Hunter Pence, Mr. Pence sure is starting to hit some of these balls deep out of ballparks in the last few days. With that deep fly to left center field Pence now has seven home runs on the season. I just wish he would stop swinging at the first pitch out of the strike zone every at bat, opposing pitchers are never going to throw him a strike on the first pitch if he keeps doing this.

Joe Blanton pitched tonight for the Phillies and he looked to continue his dominance from his last outing where he pitched a three hit shutout in Atlanta.

Joe Blanton pitched a hitless scoreless first three innings tonight against the Mets, he ran into some trouble in the top of the fourth inning but was able to pitch his way out of the jam and not allow more than one run.

Blanton could not get out of the seventh inning jam and left the game allowing a run in the inning, he was later charged with two more runs because the bullpen sucks.

Joe Blanton pitched 6.2 innings tonight and allowed four runs off of five hits, then the Phillies went to the arson squad bullpen and basically lost the game.

Chad Qualls has to be the worse reliever in baseball,

If you want to see the horrible sequence of the bullpen here you go.

The Phillies continue to have the worst bullpen ERA in the major leagues.

The name of the game this year for the Phillies is to push across early runs, the Phillies pushed a across another run in the bottom of the second inning off of a Pete Orr RBI single to centerfield, later in the inning Shane Victorino doubled to left to score two Phillies runs. Too many games this year I have seen the Phillies get out to the early lead only to blow it late.

It was the 216th sellout tonight at Citizens Bank Park, there was Pockets of empty seats everywhere. It was the smallest sellout since the streak began.

John Mayberry Jr. had the best night I think of all season, making great contact with the ball  all night long, something I have not seen in past games. Mayberry went 2 for 4 tonight.

Phillies next game is tomorrow night where Cliff Lee will pitch for the first time since April 18th, Lee pitched ten shutout innings in that game but the Phillies could not score a win and lost the game. Lee went on the disabled list the next day with a strained oblique muscle. Lee has pitched two pain-free bullpen session and is ready to go tomorrow night. Dillon Gee will pitch for the New York Mets.

Some Other Notes

Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo was fined an undisclosed amount by MLB for his comments about Hamels beaning Bryce Harper. I guess if you talk you get fined.
