Back to .500

The Phillies explode with nine runs tonight and now are back to .500 baseball on the season with this 9-2 win tonight over the Cubs.

Freddy Galvis started the offensive production tonight when he batted home his 16th RBI on the year in the top of the second inning to give the Phillies and Kyle Kendrick a 1-0 lead to work with.

Phillies could have added some much-needed runs in the top of the third inning but Carlos Ruiz who has been the most consistent offensive bat for the Phillies so far this season grounded into a 6-3 twin killing double play to end the one out bases loaded rally. This team continues to fail with runners in scoring position.

Those stranded runners would not come back to haunt them tonight.

After Juan Pierre lost a ball in the Chicago night sky and Kyle Kendrick gifted Alfonso Soriano with a pitch down the middle the Cubs took a 2-1 lead. How do you give up a home run to the washed up Alfonso Soriano?

Those would be the only runs the Cubs would score tonight.

I get nervous every time someone makes contact with a Kyle Kendrick pitch as of late because they are just floating up there on a tee waiting to get crushed.

The Phillies would tie it up in the next inning off of a weak little ground out that scored Kyle Kendrick from third base. Kendrick was able to earn his first hit of the season tonight and  even scored. He does everything, hit, score, and gives up runs.

I guess since Kyle Kendrick pitched very well tonight I can’t rag on him till his next performance, Kendrick pitched six innings and gave up two runs off of three hits, he was only charged with one run because Pierre can’t catch out in left field.

Kendrick however would not chalk up a win tonight but he sure pitched well tonight.

Mr. MVP himself Carlos Ruiz broke the 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth inning as he crushed his 7th big fly of the season.

Phillies added a ton of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to pretty much secure the fourth win in a row, the longest winning streak of the season continues.

Hector Luna really blew the game open in the inning with his first career grand slam to send the Cubs fans to the exits.

Bullpen did not allow a run tonight.

The Phillies conclude this short two game road trip tomorrow night at 8:05 Pm EST in Chicago against the Cubs. Roy Halladay will toe the rubber for the Phillies tomorrow night before the Phillies head home to begin a three game series against the Boston Red Sox.

Some Other Notes

Vance Worley who was put on the 15 day disabled list earlier this afternoon due to right elbow pain was examined this afternoon and there was no structural damage to that elbow thank goodness. No real timetable on his return to the starting rotation.

Chase Utley came back to life today and fielded some ground balls for the first time since rejoining the team May 5th.

Placido Polanco left tonight’s game with a bruised left knee.

Frustrating Game Ends Well for the Phils

Hunter Pence and the Phillies walk off with a 4-3 victory after blowing Cliff Lee’s great pitching performance in the ninth.

It was a rainy ugly grey morning as we moved closer to first pitch in South Philadelphia but with about an hour till game time the tarp was rolled off the field and they started to prepare it for some afternoon baseball.

The game started right on time despite meteorologists saying it was going to be pouring at this time. How do you get a meteorologist job? Would sure be easy to be wrong all of the time, I’m already a professional at being wrong.

Right off the bat this team frustrated me today and it was really to early out here on the west coast to be filled with rage, the Phillies tried to use small ball in the first inning to score a run but it backfired in their face and they got nada. You just have to love bunting with no outs when Jimmy Rollins is already in scoring position. What respectable team does that?

Phillies decided to use long ball in the next inning and it really worked a lot better, shockerino.

Brian Schneider did something he does not do to often in the bottom of the second inning, he hit a hit a two run home run to right field to give the Phillies an early 2-0 lead. The first home run for Schneider since April 21st of last year.

Hunter Pence added on to his home run total with an opposite field big fly to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, his eighth on the season.

Offense finally gave Cliff Lee some runs to work with today, something that has not happened in his prior starts.

Cliff Lee pitched like Cliff Lee normally does on a daily basis today, getting strikeouts, getting outs, and working fast. The only mistake Lee made on the day was a fastball down the middle to Matt Jones who crushed it to left field.

Lee went eight innings today and only allowed one run off of five hits. But gets a no decision because the bullpen sucks basically.

Jonathan Papelbon was not available today because he’s has pitched the last three days, Chad Qualls pitched the ninth instead.

Qualls can never pitch a relaxing inning, he allowed a run and Hunter Pence botched a play in right to blow his victory. Cliff Lee should get a free kick on Chad Qualls.

Qualls could not finish the inning and the Phillies brought out Jake Diekman to get the final out in the inning in his MLB debut, he did just that and stranded runners on second and third.

Diekman came back out to pitch the tenth inning and did an outstanding job.

This was the final time the Houston Astros played in Philadelphia as a National League club. I did not realize this before today. This really sucks because I always loved playing the Astros because they are horrid and we can usually beat them.

222nd sellout in a row today at Citizens Bank Park.

Phillies next game is tomorrow night at 8:05 Pm EST in Chicago against the Cubs.

Phillies win 5-1, Polanco Reaches Milestone

This was a battle between two very bad teams, the sea of empty blue seats at first pitch was a result of these teams combined suckness so far this season.

These next four games for the Phillies are almost must win games because they are playing the Astros and Cubs. Both teams do not have a lot going for them so the Phillies need to pick up some victories.

The offense did well tonight, however the first four innings it would have seemed we were facing a Cy Young out there, pitching did very well tonight. But we were facing the Astros so don’t get to excited.

The Phillies were able to push across the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning off of a Freddy Galvis RBI single, both offenses were sputtering until the Phillies were actually able to get people on base in that inning. The Phillies had the bases loaded with two outs in the inning but Juan Pierre was up and we all know how that ended.

While the rain continued misting over Citizens Bank Park Carlos Ruiz singled home Shane Victorino in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.

The Phillies were not done in the sixth, Freddy Galvis singled home another run in the  inning to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead. Galvis was the offensive spark plug tonight.

Placido Polanco reached the 2,000 mark in hits tonight and did it in grand style. Polanco hit a two run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to capture this milestone.

Joe Blanton pitched a pretty great game tonight against a pretty horrid Houston Astros offense. Blanton allowed one run off of six hits tonight in his seven innings of work.

Bastardo and Qualls together got the Phillies through the eighth inning without allowing any more runs and that set it up for the billion dollar reliever.

Papelbon pitched a clean ninth inning and the Phillies are only two game under .500 now.

Phillies next game is tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 Pm EST. After tomorrow’s game against the Houston Astros the Phillies will head to Chicago to play the Cubs for two games and then return to Citizens Bank Park Friday for a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox. This Schedule is little loopy this week, someone must have been a little tipsy when they were writing this weeks schedule.

Gameday Preview: Game 36 Phillies vs Astros

The Philadelphia Phillies begin a two game quick series against the Houston Astros tonight at Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia, first pitch around 7:05 Pm EST.

It was nice to see the Phillies edge on the Padres yesterday to pick up the win and win the series on Mother’s Day. Yesterday was the final time the Phillies and Padres will meet this season.

Joe Blanton will toe the rubber for the Phillies tonight, he comes into tonight with a 3-3 record and a respectable 3.24 ERA. Blanton allowed four runs off of five hits in his last outing against the New York Mets, he wound up with a no decision as the bullpen blew the ball game.

Phillies bats will face righty Lucas Harrel, he has a record of 2-2 and an ERA of 4.58 so far in this young season.

Placido Polanco will again go for his 2,000th hit tonight, he bats sixth tonight.

Weather at game time tonight.

Phillies Take Series

Phillies win 3-2 and win the series on Mothers Day.

Cole Hamels took the hill this afternoon for the first time since being suspended for admitting he hit Bryce Harper on purpose. Hamels did not look like he was his sharpest today but he was able to get through the day and only allow one run.

Hamels went seven innings strong today and allowed one run off of five hits. The offense was able to back him up with three runs this afternoon.

Jimmy Rollins started the day off of with a bang as he was able to hit his first home run of the season to leadoff the bottom of the first. Jimmy Rollins has been in pretty horrible slump so far this season and hopefully this will spark something with him. The home run was kind of a cheap line drive down the right field line but a home run is a home run no matter the distance. 38th career leadoff home run for Rollins.

Rollins’ first home run of the year came in his 34th game and 136th at bat. Only year it took longer for him to get his first big fly was 2004 (Game 40, AB 156

Brian Schneider gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single that scored Ty Wigginton from second. So once again the Phillies were able to push across early runs.

Phillies tallied another run in the bottom of the fifth inning off of the bat of all-star Juan Pierre. It’s sad when Brain Schneider and Juan Pierre are your offensive production for the day.

The Phillies had to go to the bullpen in the top of the eighth inning and when they go to the bullpen it is always worrisome.

Jose Contreras came out to pitch the eighth inning and he allowed one run, the Phillies then brought in lefty Antonio Bastardo to finish the eighth inning. The Phillies were able to get out of inning with a one run lead thankfully.

Jonathan Papelbon came in to shut the door in the ninth and picked up his tenth save on the season.

Phillies next game is tomorrow night against the Houston Astros, this game will start around 7:05 Pm EST and is the start of a two game series. After this series the Phillies head to Chicago to play the Cubs in a two game series and then return back home. Whoever created this schedule must be drunk or something.

Gameday Preview: Game 35 Phillies vs Padres

Happy Mother’s Day.

We roll out the pink equipment this afternoon so hopefully these pink bats can help the offense pick up some runs, and maybe just maybe stop Hunter Pence from swinging at every single pitch. I never seen a more inpatient hitter at the plate then Hunter Pence

This is the final game of this three game series against the San Diego Padres, first pitch around 1:35 Pm EST.

Cole Hamels will start his first game since his little incident with Bryce Harper that landed Hamels a five game suspension.

Gameday Preview: Game 34 Phillies vs Padres

I guess the key to the Phillies victories is me not watching the games, so someone come into my house and please take all of the tv’s out of my house.

Just for your information I will not be able to watch tonight’s game so the Phillies will win again.

Okay enough of that stupidity

The Phillies look to win game two of this three game series tonight at 7:05 Pm EST against the San Diego Padres.

Last night featured some offense and the bullpen for once did not blow the freaking game, it’s a miracle. The bullpen was able to pitch three scoreless innings in relief of Vance Worley who got hit just a tad bit last night. I really thought that our bullpen could never be able to throw three scoreless innings but they somehow pulled a rabbit out of their ass and worked some magic.

Roy Halladay will take the hill for the Phillies this evening, Halladay has had some rough outings as of late and it really is saddening me. Doc has received a no decision in his past two outings, has that ever happen before? I don’t recall Halladay having two no decisions in a row since joining the Phillies until now.

Edinson Volquez will start for the Padres.

Since Velocity has been a big storyline this year for Halladay here is his velocity in the past years.

The Phillies have made more roster moves. Mike Fontenot has been called up to the big club. There has been a ton of roster moves this week and my small brain is beginning to hurt because of it.

This game will be televised on CSN, 1210 WPHT for radio.

Weather at game time tonight in South Philadelphia.

Gameday Preview: Game 32 Phillies vs Mets, Still Sane

Happy Wednesday, everybody have a good evening.

After last nights blunder of a loss where the Phillies blew a 4-0 lead and could not push across any runs late in the game are right back at it tonight against the Mets, this is the series finale and first pitch is around 7:05 Pm EST. The Phillies are about to get swept by the Mets, just ponder that for a second.

I really don’t have the actually stats sitting in front of me but the Phillies bullpen has blown at least eight games this year, the pitcher I thought that would never blow game blew a game on monday and that was Jonathan Papelbon. I never thought the billion dollar closer would give up a home run to a guy that has never even had a hit in the major leagues. It’s like just pick your poison out there in the bullpen. The poison last night was Chad Qualls,  the first batter he faced the Mets tied it up after the worst rundown I have ever seen in my life.

Cliff Lee will toe the rubber for the Phillies tonight, the first time since April 18th.  In that game Cliff Lee pitched ten scoreless innings and the Phillies still lost the game, just nauseating. That has been the story of the season, nauseating.

To make room to activate Cliff Lee the Phillies sent Michael Schwimer down to triple A this afternoon. Schwimer had an 8.53 ERA in five appearances with the Phillies.

Guys you need to drink to watch the Phillies this season.

Dillon Gee will pitch for the Mets tonight, Gee is 2-2 on the season. He received a no decision his last time out against Arizona.

So if the Phillies get out to the early lead tonight I fully expect them to blow the game late, I know I sound negative but how could you be positive right now. My head is slowly exploding.

We just need Ryan Howard and Chase Utley back on this team.

Gameday Preview: Game 31 Phillies vs Mets, Please keep me Sane

Happy Tuesday.

After last nights horrible 5-2 loss the Phillies are right back at it this evening to play game two of this three game series against the New York Mets, first pitch around 7:05 Pm EST.

Last nights game was one of those game where you finish the whole bottle of rum off, when Roy Halladay is on the mound you just don’t expect him to walk away from a game with a no decision. You also don’t expect your 50 billion dollar closer to give up a three run home run to a guy that has never hit a home run in the major leagues, let alone a hit. Anything that could go bad for the Phillies last night went bad, the good thing about this sport is that there is always a game the next day.

That guy who hit the home run last night was Jordany Valdespin, and yes he is the starting lineup tonight.

The Phillies bats were hitting the balls hard in the first couple of innings but after that the bats went into hibernation and could never push across another run.

The Phillies are going to keep all of the bars in business at this rate.

Joe Blanton will take the hill for the Phillies tonight and in his last performance he probably pitched the best of any Phillies pitcher so far this season, the Phillies also really needed that outing from him. Last time out for Blanton he pitched a three hit shutout in Atlanta, the Phillies lost the night before in eleven innings so the Phillies really needed an outing like this because the bullpen was on their last leg. Phillies got the win that day and the bullpen was granted a much-needed rest.

Veteran righty Miguel Batista will pitch for the Mets, over his eighteen year major league career he has been on twelve different ball clubs. Career record of 101-113 and an ERA of  4.49 in his lengthy career.

A cool rainy 60 degrees around game time tonight at Citizens Bank Park, 50 percent chance of rain at game time.

This game is not on ESPN tonight so I will not get blacked out, ESPN just has horrible announces, and they like to have make out sessions with a certain player throughout the game. Especially if your name is Bryce Harper. If you had to take a shot of tequila every time ESPN mentioned Bryce Harper’s name you would probably die quickly of Alcohol poisoning.

And on that very positive note the picture down below represents my reaction tonight if the Phillies lose. I apologize to my house.

Go Phillies!

Go Flyers!

Go Sports!

Gameday Preview: Game 30 Phillies vs Mets

The Philadelphia Phillies return home tonight to begin a lengthy home stand, the New York Mets start off of that home stand tonight at 7:05 Pm EST.

Yesterdays game went very lovely if you were a Phillies fans, Cole Hamels pitched a tremendous ball game and the Phillies bats woke up from hibernation and supported Cole’s great pitching performance.

Now I have always had respect for Cole Hamels but after yesterdays game and his comments after the game I have total respect for him now. In the first inning young phenom Bryce Harper stepped up to the plate and the first pitch Hamels threw to him was a fastball that hit his back. At the time of the event I really just thought Hamels lost control of his fastball, but his post game comments said otherwise, “I was trying to hit him. I’m not going to deny it.” I have mad respect for Mr. I’m going to break the bank with the contract I’m going to be offered in the offseason. I love people who just come out and speak the truth, that don’t sugarcoat everything. I really hope the Phillies can muster up some money to sign Hamels to an extension.

He will probably get fined for this which is chicken shit but I just hope he doesn’t get suspended.

“never seen a more classless, gutless chicken [bleep] act in my 30 years in baseball.” This is what Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo had to say about Cole Hamels hitting Bryce Harper. The Nationals visit Citizens Bank Park in two weeks, to bad we can’t hit the general manager with a ball right between his eyes.

Roy Halladay will take the hill for the Phillies this evening at Citizens Bank Park, he will look to make up or redeem himself from his last start where he gave up eight runs to the Atlanta Braves. I will always love Halladay no matter what so I wasn’t really mad after last weeks game. Every pitcher no matter who you are is going to have a bad game every once in a while and that was the case last weekend with Roy Halladay. It just seemed like through the first four innings of that baseball game Halladay had his stuff and was going to cruise to the victory, but in the fifth and sixth inning the Braves figured out something and began to pound Halladay. Just goes to show you that baseball is one weird sport and don’t even try to predict it or it will bite you in the tush.

The Phillies bats will face New York Mets lefty Jon Niese tonight, Niese is 2-1 on the season and has an ERA of 4.08 so far. The Philllies faced Niese earlier this season at Citizens Bank Park and were shutout, Phillies were only able to chalk up five hits in that game.

This game is on ESPN again tonight and my question is what will ESPN cameras show since there mancrush Bryce Harper isn’t playing? Will they actually have to show the game that’s being played for once? Its Armageddon.

A cloudy 64 degrees at game time tonight. 20 percent chance of rain.

Go Phillies!
