Gameday Preview: Game 36 Phillies vs Astros

The Philadelphia Phillies begin a two game quick series against the Houston Astros tonight at Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia, first pitch around 7:05 Pm EST.

It was nice to see the Phillies edge on the Padres yesterday to pick up the win and win the series on Mother’s Day. Yesterday was the final time the Phillies and Padres will meet this season.

Joe Blanton will toe the rubber for the Phillies tonight, he comes into tonight with a 3-3 record and a respectable 3.24 ERA. Blanton allowed four runs off of five hits in his last outing against the New York Mets, he wound up with a no decision as the bullpen blew the ball game.

Phillies bats will face righty Lucas Harrel, he has a record of 2-2 and an ERA of 4.58 so far in this young season.

Placido Polanco will again go for his 2,000th hit tonight, he bats sixth tonight.

Weather at game time tonight.

Phillies Take Series

Phillies win 3-2 and win the series on Mothers Day.

Cole Hamels took the hill this afternoon for the first time since being suspended for admitting he hit Bryce Harper on purpose. Hamels did not look like he was his sharpest today but he was able to get through the day and only allow one run.

Hamels went seven innings strong today and allowed one run off of five hits. The offense was able to back him up with three runs this afternoon.

Jimmy Rollins started the day off of with a bang as he was able to hit his first home run of the season to leadoff the bottom of the first. Jimmy Rollins has been in pretty horrible slump so far this season and hopefully this will spark something with him. The home run was kind of a cheap line drive down the right field line but a home run is a home run no matter the distance. 38th career leadoff home run for Rollins.

Rollins’ first home run of the year came in his 34th game and 136th at bat. Only year it took longer for him to get his first big fly was 2004 (Game 40, AB 156

Brian Schneider gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single that scored Ty Wigginton from second. So once again the Phillies were able to push across early runs.

Phillies tallied another run in the bottom of the fifth inning off of the bat of all-star Juan Pierre. It’s sad when Brain Schneider and Juan Pierre are your offensive production for the day.

The Phillies had to go to the bullpen in the top of the eighth inning and when they go to the bullpen it is always worrisome.

Jose Contreras came out to pitch the eighth inning and he allowed one run, the Phillies then brought in lefty Antonio Bastardo to finish the eighth inning. The Phillies were able to get out of inning with a one run lead thankfully.

Jonathan Papelbon came in to shut the door in the ninth and picked up his tenth save on the season.

Phillies next game is tomorrow night against the Houston Astros, this game will start around 7:05 Pm EST and is the start of a two game series. After this series the Phillies head to Chicago to play the Cubs in a two game series and then return back home. Whoever created this schedule must be drunk or something.

Gameday Preview: Game 34 Phillies vs Padres

I guess the key to the Phillies victories is me not watching the games, so someone come into my house and please take all of the tv’s out of my house.

Just for your information I will not be able to watch tonight’s game so the Phillies will win again.

Okay enough of that stupidity

The Phillies look to win game two of this three game series tonight at 7:05 Pm EST against the San Diego Padres.

Last night featured some offense and the bullpen for once did not blow the freaking game, it’s a miracle. The bullpen was able to pitch three scoreless innings in relief of Vance Worley who got hit just a tad bit last night. I really thought that our bullpen could never be able to throw three scoreless innings but they somehow pulled a rabbit out of their ass and worked some magic.

Roy Halladay will take the hill for the Phillies this evening, Halladay has had some rough outings as of late and it really is saddening me. Doc has received a no decision in his past two outings, has that ever happen before? I don’t recall Halladay having two no decisions in a row since joining the Phillies until now.

Edinson Volquez will start for the Padres.

Since Velocity has been a big storyline this year for Halladay here is his velocity in the past years.

The Phillies have made more roster moves. Mike Fontenot has been called up to the big club. There has been a ton of roster moves this week and my small brain is beginning to hurt because of it.

This game will be televised on CSN, 1210 WPHT for radio.

Weather at game time tonight in South Philadelphia.

Gameday Preview: Game 32 Phillies vs Mets, Still Sane

Happy Wednesday, everybody have a good evening.

After last nights blunder of a loss where the Phillies blew a 4-0 lead and could not push across any runs late in the game are right back at it tonight against the Mets, this is the series finale and first pitch is around 7:05 Pm EST. The Phillies are about to get swept by the Mets, just ponder that for a second.

I really don’t have the actually stats sitting in front of me but the Phillies bullpen has blown at least eight games this year, the pitcher I thought that would never blow game blew a game on monday and that was Jonathan Papelbon. I never thought the billion dollar closer would give up a home run to a guy that has never even had a hit in the major leagues. It’s like just pick your poison out there in the bullpen. The poison last night was Chad Qualls,  the first batter he faced the Mets tied it up after the worst rundown I have ever seen in my life.

Cliff Lee will toe the rubber for the Phillies tonight, the first time since April 18th.  In that game Cliff Lee pitched ten scoreless innings and the Phillies still lost the game, just nauseating. That has been the story of the season, nauseating.

To make room to activate Cliff Lee the Phillies sent Michael Schwimer down to triple A this afternoon. Schwimer had an 8.53 ERA in five appearances with the Phillies.

Guys you need to drink to watch the Phillies this season.

Dillon Gee will pitch for the Mets tonight, Gee is 2-2 on the season. He received a no decision his last time out against Arizona.

So if the Phillies get out to the early lead tonight I fully expect them to blow the game late, I know I sound negative but how could you be positive right now. My head is slowly exploding.

We just need Ryan Howard and Chase Utley back on this team.

Gameday Preview: Game 29 Phillies vs Nationals

The Philadelphia Phillies conclude the series against the Washington Nationals tonight, the Phillies will look to not get swept tonight and salvage the third and final game of this series tonight at 8:05 Pm EST.

Cole Hamels will take the hill for the Phillies and will be in search for his fourth win on the season. Hamels has really been the most consistent starter in the Phillies starting rotation so far this season. Hamels pitched a pretty good game last time out but the bullpen blew the game and he received a no decision.

The struggling Phillies bats will have to face Nationals righty Jordan Zimmerman. On the year he has a 1-2 record but has a pretty good ERA of 1.89. The National just don’t back him up with any runs and hopefully that is the case tonight also.

This game is televised on ESPN at 8:05 Pm EST.

Gameday Preview: Game 28 Phillies vs Nationals

The Philadelphia Phillies will play game two of this three game series this afternoon at 1:05 PM EST in Natitude land.

Last nights game did not go as planned, the bullpen again was a little shaky and they lost the game in the bottom of the eleventh inning. I did not see the ending of that lovely game last night but I’m glad I didn’t because it would not have been pretty, something might have been broken. Phillies can’t keep giving up these leads late in these games, the starters who pitch great ball games are getting screwed out of victories.

Even with the Phillies struggles this year they are only 4.5 games out of first place.

Both pitchers today have been really good so far this season, both of them have an ERA under two.

Mr. Vanimal Vance Worley will take the hill for the Phillies today in hope of winning his third game of the season. Worley is 2-1 on the season and has a very impressive 1.97 ERA on the season. They say the most telling year of a young pitchers career is his second season in the major leagues, this is Worley’s second season and so far it is going very well and let’s hope this continues.

The Phillies bats will have to face another great starter for the Washington Nationals, Gio Gonzalez will toe the rubber for the Nats and he looks to win his third game of the season. Gonzalez has a 1.82 ERA going into today’s ball game.

This game will be televised on CSN, 1210 WPHT for radio.

Isolated ThunderStorms at game time.

Shocking Late Inning Offense

For the second night in a row the Phillies were able to spark some late inning offense.

That no offensive production all the Phillies fans love and know to heart made an appearance through the first three innings tonight but something sparked them in the top of the four inning. Placido Polanco the God from last night erased that goose egg out of the hit column in the top of the fourth, two batters later Hunter Pence hit a little cue shot to the right side of the infield and it got through the infield to right field, the balls was hit slow enough that Hunter Pence was able to make it to second base on the play. Next batter was Wigginton and he got both of those runners home on a 2 RBI clutch single, he was able to make it to third on the play because the Braves Left fielder let the ball go right by him.

Cole Hamels pitched a really great game tonight but was not able to pick up the victory, Hamels went six strong innings but the Phillies had to go to the bullpen because Hamels threw a lot of pitches tonight, Hamels allowed two runs overall tonight and it just seemed like he fell behind hitters 2-0 a lot tonight and because of that his pitch count was high.

Both the Phillies and the Braves went to the bullpen at almost the same time tonight, the Braves have a really great bullpen and the Phillies so far this season have had a pretty shaky bullpen.

You would have never thought the Phillies would be able to produce runs off of this strong Braves bullpen but in the eighth inning the Phillies pushed across two runs off of a wild pitch and a Hunter Pence single to the opposite way to get the win and move the Phillies back to a .500 record on the season.

The Phillies shaky bullpen was able to make it through the late innings tonight without allowing a run, Bastardo pitched great in his inning of work, Qualls allowed some baserunners in his inning but was able to pitch himself out of the jam, and Papelbon continues to be perfect in his save situations as he picked up his ninth save on the season.

21,640 fans at Turner Field tonight, pretty pathetic.

The Phillies now look to get their record above .500 for the first time since opening day tomorrow night.

Phillies next game is tomorrow night against the Atlanta Braves at 7:10 Pm EST. Roy Halladay will pitch for the Phillies and Tommy Hanson for the Braves.

Some Other Notes from Atlanta

33-year-old righty Brian Sanches has been added to the 40 man roster to fill the spot of the injured David Herndon. I thought the Phillies might give prospect Jake Diekman the promotion but the Phillies decided to go with experience and a right-handed pticher. Sanches pitched very well in spring training and has continued that in Triple A. The starters for the Phillies really need to go deep into games because this bullpen is very shaky. A quality start from a starter could just vanish with this bullpen.

Here is a great story on Antonio Bastardo and his use this year out of the bullpen.

Gameday Preview: Game 24 Phillies at Braves

The Philadelphia Phillies begin there six game road trip tonight at 7:10 Pm EST in Atlanta against the Braves.

Awww I remember this ball park, this is where the Phillies knocked the Atlanta Braves out of the playoffs on the final day of the regular season last year, also on that great day where the Phillies won their 102nd game of the season, the most in franchise history.

Hopefully if the Phillies get a lead tonight  the bullpen arson squad doesn’t blow it like last night. Vance Worley got screwed out of a win last night and that saddens me.

The Phillies will send out Cole Hamels who has a 3-1 record and an ERA of 2.73.

The Braves will send out starter Brandon Beachy who is having a wonderful start to his season, he is 2-1 and has a remarkable ERA of 1.05. In the two victories he has both of those game were shutouts.

This game will be televised on TCN and the MLB Network, 1210 WPHT for radio.

It will be 83 degrees at game time tonight in Atlanta with a 10 percent chance of rain.

Month In Review

The first month of the regular season for the Phillies could have been worse, it actuallycould have been really bad but as we flip the calendars to May the Phillies finish the month with a 11-12 record and are only 3.5 games out of first place.

It wasn’t the best month ever but we did get through it and somehow come out of it with only one game under .500. Some of the game were really hard to watch and really frustrated the living hell out of me but some games were actually pretty enjoyable if that’s possible. The Phillies really did a lot better than I thought through the first month of play, especially after the Phillies dropped two games to the pathetic San Diego Padres. That west coast trip really looked like it was going to go really horrible but the Phillies pulled some offense out of their ass or somewhere and won the games with their offense in the final two games of that road trip in Arizona against the Diamondbacks.

On that trip Cliff Lee was put on the disabled list, this upcoming friday there was a chance Cliff Lee might come off of the disabled list to pitch against the Nationals in Washington but that will not happen. Lee is getting better but he must throw two bullpen session before he can go out there and start a ball game, so far the first bullpen session has not been scheduled quite yet.

The Flyers hockey offense out scores the Phillies offense on a regular basis but at least we are pulling out some victories and we are not six games back already, the Phillies are in the hunt and I know its way too early to say this kind of garbage but hey I’m just giddy and thrilled we are keeping pace and getting these much-needed victories with Ryan Howard and Chase Utley out of the lineup.

Speaking of Chase Utley we had a glimpse of Utley when the Phillies were in Arizona, he was with the team that three game series against the Diamondbacks and he even shagged some fly balls and hit a little in batting practice before those games. Once the team left Arizona Chase remained there to continue to rehab and sip margaritas throughout the day.

Ryan Howard began his rehab in Clearwater today.

So lets hope as the months roll by the Phillies keep getting better and more importantly the Phillies keep getting healthier.

Here are some pictures from when the Phillies were out west, and thanks to everybody that has stopped by this site through the first month of the regular season. It really means a lot to me and I thank each and every one of you.

Injury Updates

Philles general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. released a statement on some injuries today.

After seeing the wound specialist in Philadelphia yesterday, Ryan Howard’s wound has     gotten smaller and is healing. We’ve been advised to limit his activities for one more week to allow it to continue to heal. We hope that he will be able to re-start his baseball activities thereafter.

This is really taken a long time to heal and something just does not seem right with this healing process, I’m not a doctor and I will never be one because as a patient you would never want me to perform any type of procedure on you but something is just not adding up here, this healing process is not going well. Will we see Howard back at anytime this season?

Hunter Pence will undergo a precautionary MRI on his left shoulder (non-throwing) here in Phoenix. We hope to have the results later this afternoon.

Hunter Pence hurt his left shoulder in a game on Sunday, Let’s hope he is okay.

Chase Utley was back with the team yesterday in Phoenix, he shagged some fly balls in batting practice and even hit a little before the game. After the Phillies conclude this three game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks Chase will remain in Arizona to continue his rehabbing.
