For the second night in a row the Phillies were able to spark some late inning offense.
That no offensive production all the Phillies fans love and know to heart made an appearance through the first three innings tonight but something sparked them in the top of the four inning. Placido Polanco the God from last night erased that goose egg out of the hit column in the top of the fourth, two batters later Hunter Pence hit a little cue shot to the right side of the infield and it got through the infield to right field, the balls was hit slow enough that Hunter Pence was able to make it to second base on the play. Next batter was Wigginton and he got both of those runners home on a 2 RBI clutch single, he was able to make it to third on the play because the Braves Left fielder let the ball go right by him.
Cole Hamels pitched a really great game tonight but was not able to pick up the victory, Hamels went six strong innings but the Phillies had to go to the bullpen because Hamels threw a lot of pitches tonight, Hamels allowed two runs overall tonight and it just seemed like he fell behind hitters 2-0 a lot tonight and because of that his pitch count was high.
Both the Phillies and the Braves went to the bullpen at almost the same time tonight, the Braves have a really great bullpen and the Phillies so far this season have had a pretty shaky bullpen.
You would have never thought the Phillies would be able to produce runs off of this strong Braves bullpen but in the eighth inning the Phillies pushed across two runs off of a wild pitch and a Hunter Pence single to the opposite way to get the win and move the Phillies back to a .500 record on the season.
The Phillies shaky bullpen was able to make it through the late innings tonight without allowing a run, Bastardo pitched great in his inning of work, Qualls allowed some baserunners in his inning but was able to pitch himself out of the jam, and Papelbon continues to be perfect in his save situations as he picked up his ninth save on the season.
21,640 fans at Turner Field tonight, pretty pathetic.
The Phillies now look to get their record above .500 for the first time since opening day tomorrow night.
Phillies next game is tomorrow night against the Atlanta Braves at 7:10 Pm EST. Roy Halladay will pitch for the Phillies and Tommy Hanson for the Braves.
Some Other Notes from Atlanta
33-year-old righty Brian Sanches has been added to the 40 man roster to fill the spot of the injured David Herndon. I thought the Phillies might give prospect Jake Diekman the promotion but the Phillies decided to go with experience and a right-handed pticher. Sanches pitched very well in spring training and has continued that in Triple A. The starters for the Phillies really need to go deep into games because this bullpen is very shaky. A quality start from a starter could just vanish with this bullpen.
Here is a great story on Antonio Bastardo and his use this year out of the bullpen.
