Phillies win 3-2 and win the series on Mothers Day.
Cole Hamels took the hill this afternoon for the first time since being suspended for admitting he hit Bryce Harper on purpose. Hamels did not look like he was his sharpest today but he was able to get through the day and only allow one run.
Hamels went seven innings strong today and allowed one run off of five hits. The offense was able to back him up with three runs this afternoon.
Jimmy Rollins started the day off of with a bang as he was able to hit his first home run of the season to leadoff the bottom of the first. Jimmy Rollins has been in pretty horrible slump so far this season and hopefully this will spark something with him. The home run was kind of a cheap line drive down the right field line but a home run is a home run no matter the distance. 38th career leadoff home run for Rollins.
Rollins’ first home run of the year came in his 34th game and 136th at bat. Only year it took longer for him to get his first big fly was 2004 (Game 40, AB 156
Brian Schneider gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single that scored Ty Wigginton from second. So once again the Phillies were able to push across early runs.
Phillies tallied another run in the bottom of the fifth inning off of the bat of all-star Juan Pierre. It’s sad when Brain Schneider and Juan Pierre are your offensive production for the day.
The Phillies had to go to the bullpen in the top of the eighth inning and when they go to the bullpen it is always worrisome.
Jose Contreras came out to pitch the eighth inning and he allowed one run, the Phillies then brought in lefty Antonio Bastardo to finish the eighth inning. The Phillies were able to get out of inning with a one run lead thankfully.
Jonathan Papelbon came in to shut the door in the ninth and picked up his tenth save on the season.
Phillies next game is tomorrow night against the Houston Astros, this game will start around 7:05 Pm EST and is the start of a two game series. After this series the Phillies head to Chicago to play the Cubs in a two game series and then return back home. Whoever created this schedule must be drunk or something.
