Joe Blanton took the hill for the Phillies this afternoon in Clearwater Florida, two batters into the game Dustin Pedroia hit a opposite field home run to take an early 1-0 Red Sox lead. Blanton would allow another run in the top of the second inning when the Red Sox got runners on the corners with no outs, an infield error by Jimmy Rollins allowed the runner to score. Big Papi David Ortiz lined a single to center in the top of the fifth to add another run to the Red Sox Lead, next batter was Cody Ross and he crushed a two run home run to left field to give the Red Sox a 5-0 lead. Blanton would pitch a total of five innings today and gave up three runs on seven hits, he also struck out five.
Cody Ross is hot dogging in a grapefruit league game today, when he hit that home run he did his little lame bat flip thing. I’m glad Ross acts like an idiot in a spring training game.
Joe Blanton really worries me if he is going to be the fifth starter in this rotation. Somedays Blanton just gets crushed and gives up a lot of runs. Every fifth game Blanton will pitch and that really worries me.
Hector Neris, Chad Qualls, Tyson Brummett, and Lisalberto Bonilla all worked in relief today for the Phillies. Tyson Brummett was the only pitcher other than Joe Blanton to give a run today, Brummet gave up a solo home run in the top of the ninth.
Lou Montanez got the first hit of the day for the Phillies in the bottom of the third. The Phillies would get some opportunities to score in the third but could not capitalise. Phillies had three hits today total and no runs at all.
Jon Lester was pitching for the Red Sox today and he was excellent.
Phillies next spring training game is tomorrow against the Pittsburgh Pirates at 1:05 Pm Eastern Time.
We are only ten days away from opening day for the Phillies.
