Phillies Lose 8-5 At Final Spring Game At Bright House Field

Roy Halladay took the mound today against his former team the Toronto Blue Jays, Halladay had that regular season intensity this afternoon. In the second inning leadoff hitter Edwin Encarnacion took Roy Halladay deep to give the Blue Jays the early lead, that is the 7th home run Halladay has allowed this spring. Doc would allow one more run in the inning off of a Brett Lawrie RBI single.

In the top of the third inning the Florida Rain starting falling at Bright House Field, they rolled the tarp onto the field and we went into the first rain delay this spring at the final home spring game. The game would eventually resume with Roy Halladay out of the game.

Halladay went two innings today and allowed two runs off of three hits in his final spring appearance of the year, also struck out three Blue Jays hitters.

Raul Valdez came into pitch for the Phillies after the rain delay, he allowed some baserunners off of a walk and an error by third basemen Placido Polanco and eventually allowed a run off of a Eric Thames RBI single to push the Blue Jays lead to 3-0

Phillies get a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning from a Hunter Pence RBI single, as the teams played the fourth inning it was absolutely pouring rain but they continued to play.

David Herndon came in relief for Raul Valdez in the top of the fifth inning for the Phillies, Valdez pitched two innings today and allowed one run off one hit and struck out three. Herndon allowed a home run to Jose Bautista in the top of the fifth inning to give the Blue Jays a 4-1 lead. An interesting stat here is Jose Bautista has four home runs this spring and two of those are off of Phillies relief pitcher David Herndon.

David Herndon pitch two innings today and gave up one run off of three hits, 23-year-old Tyler Knigge from minor league camp came into pitch the top of the seventh inning for the Phillies, Knigge had an interesting 7th inning but only allowed one run even though the bases were loaded and no one was out.

Phillies plate a run in the bottom of the seventh off of John Mayberry Jr home run, his first home run of the spring and that ends his 0-19 slump at the plate in his last 19 at bats.

Phillies continued using minor league pitchers the rest of the game, Blue Jays would extend their lead in the top of the eighth off of a double and a two run home run.

Juan Pierre continues his hot spring with a single to centerfield that would bring home a run, Phillies would get two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off of a wild pitch and a Hector Luna RBI single.

It was a typical Florida day today in Clearwater Florida, We had rain in the early part of the game and towards the end of the game there was clear blue skies above Bright House Field. Awwww got to love that Florida weather.

Phillies announce 157,892 fans  were at Bright House Field this spring. That is a new record.

Some Other Notes

Antonio Bastardo was supposed to pitch today but instead will pitch tomorrow against the Atlanta Braves.

This was the final spring training appearance for Roy Halladay today, it was also the final Phillies home game at Bright House Field in Clearwater Florida.

Jimmy Rollins was in the three spot in the lineup this afternoon, is this where he will be in the regular season lineup with the absence of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley?

According to Todd Zolecki from MLB.com relief pitchers Jose Contreras and Michael Stutes will likely start the season on the disabled list.

Phillies next spring training game is tomorrow against the Atlanta Braves, tomorrows game will be the final spring game for the Phillies in Florida as they head up north to Philadelphia after tomorrows game and play some preseason games against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park.

We are just five days away from opening day.

Game Story And Other Notes From Tonight’s Phillies 13-9 loss

Relief pitcher Antonio Bastardo started tonight for the Phillies, Bastardo has been dealing with velocity problems this spring. Phillies really need him to work that out because he is a very important piece to this Phillies bullpen, Bastardo will likely be the setup guy to closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Bastardo only pitched 1.1 innings tonight and did not allow a hit, Bastardo only pitched 8 pitches tonight.

Closer Jonathan Papelbon came into pitch early tonight in the third inning, Papelbon allowed three straight hits in the bottom of the third including a Curtis Granderson two run home run. Papelbon would get taken out of the game with two outs in the inning, Papelbon pitched a lot of pitches in the inning, probably more than the Phillies wanted him to.

Kyle Kendrick came into pitch in the bottom of the third inning with two outs and he allowed two runs, the Yankees would get four runs in the innings and pull within one of the Phillies.

Kendrick allowed two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and that gave the Yankees the lead.

Phillies got some early hits in the first inning tonight in Tampa Florida and Hunter Pence would eventually bloop a single to get the Phillies on the board first tonight. In the second inning Juan Pierre blooped a little single to center field to give the Phillies the early 2-0 lead, than guess what? Juan Pierre got caught stealing again, the catcher had to pick the ball out of the dirt to throw it too second base and Juan Pierre still could not beat that throw. He is just one horrible base stealer.

Juan Pierre was caught stealing 17 times last season. The Phillies were caught 24 times last year as a team. Pierre has speed but he is a terrible baserunner.

The Phillies would get another run in the top of the third off of a Jim Thome RBI double, Rollins scored on the play and he was running very well around the bases. Phillies were not done after that, they would eventually get the bases loaded and Carlos Ruiz would hit a bases clearing double off of the left field wall. That would end the night for Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda.

The Phillies scored a run in each of the first three innings of the ball game.

Placido Polanco got a RBI single in the top of the fifth inning and that would tie the game up at seven.

Yankees would regain the lead in the bottom of the seventh off of a solo home run, ground rule double, and a RBI single. Lisalberto Bonilla was pitching at the time for the Phillies and he will start his season down in the minor leagues.

Phillies had a chance to cut into the 10-7 Yankees lead in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded and only one out but John Mayberry Jr. grounded into a 5-3 double play to end the inning.

The Yankees would get some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth off of a Pete Orr error at shortstop and a two run home run.

This may have been the worst baseball game I have ever seen in my life.

Some Other Notes

Juan Pierre had a four hit game tonight.

Phillies used a total of seven pitchers tonight.

Next spring training game for the Phillies is tomorrow afternoon against the Toronto Blue Jays.

We are just six days away from opening day.

Gameday Preview: Phillies vs Yankees

The Philadelphia Phillies play another spring training matchup against the New York Yankees this evening 7:05 Pm Eastern Time at Steinbrenner field in Tampa Florida.

The Phillies come into tonight’s game with a little walk off momentum from the last game, yesterday against the Tampa Bay Rays Hector Luna hit a walk off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

If you don’t know already Juan Pierre will be on the opening day roster for the Phillies, yesterday afternoon the Phils picked up his $800,000 contract.

Relief Pitcher Antonio Bastardo will start for the Phillies tonight, expect a lot of pitching changes tonight for the Phillies.

2. Shane Victorino CF

3. Jimmy Rollins SS

Phillies Get Some Cash From Trade

This morning the Philadelphia Phillies traded minor league prospect Matt Rizzotto to the Minnesota Twins for cash

He is a first basemen so the Phillies could never bring it up to the Major league level because the Phillies have Ryan Howard, or used to have Ryan Howard when he was healthy.

This trade will help out both sides, it will help Rizzotto maybe see some playing time as a designated hitter or even at first base in the Major league level. The American League will suit Rizzotto much better because they have designated hitters. This will help the Phillies because we need to get all of the money we can possibly get because of how high our payroll has gotten over the past couple of years.

In his five seasons in the Phillies organization he had a batting average of .292 and hit a total of 66 home runs.

Juan Pierre Makes The Team

Its Armageddon

Juan Pierre is going to be on the Philadelphia Phillies opening day roster.

I don’t know if Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. was drinking today or who knows what but something impressed the Phillies enough to give Pierre $800,000 and a spot on this ball club, I really don’t know what they saw.

Juan Pierre has a batting average of .313 (15-48) this spring training.

Juan Pierre is a player full of cons and basically no pros, Pierre is a horrible base stealer even though he is probably one of the fastest players in the league. Out of the 11 seasons he has played in the Major leagues he has led the league in caught stealing 7 times, that is just remarkably horrible. He can’t really hit home runs at all, Pierre only has 16 home runs in his whole 12 year career in the Majors, plus he can’t really play defense either.

Scott Podesednik was the other option for the Phillies, Podsednik is batting .347 (17-49) this spring training and he is basically not going to be on the opening day roster now because of Pierre. The Phillies will not admit it yet but Podsednik will not make this team.

Game Story And Some Notes From Today’s Phillies 2-1 win

Cole Hamels retired the first 11 batters today at Brighthouse Field in Clearwater Florida but then Evan Longoria hit a home run for the Tampa Bay Rays in the top of the fourth to give the Rays there first hit of the game and score the first run of the game.

Cole Hamels was justifying his case for a big money contract today after pitching 5.2 innings and only allowed one run off of three hits, Hamels struck out seven Rays today.

Chad Qualls, Joe Savery, and Jonathan Papelbon all pitched scoreless innings out of relief today for the Phils.

Phillies got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth off of a home run from a guy you would not expect to have power, Brian Schneider the backup catcher hit a leadoff home run to right field to tie the game. Schneider had a total of four home runs last year for the Phillies and has hit a total of 65 home runs in his twelve-year career.

Phillies had a opportunity in the bottom of the sixth to break the game wide open with runners on first and second no outs but could not get anything out of it, that inning is the perfect example of how this Phillies offense worries me. The Phillies just can’t keep getting the leadoff runners on base and then not be able to move them up or score them if they want to win.

Hector Luna hits a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth to win this game for the Phillies

Phillies scored two runs off of nine hits today.

Some Other Notes

According to Todd Zolecki from Mlb.com Phillies reliever Michael Stutes will not pitch in tomorrows game against the Yankees, he was penciled in to make an appearance out of the bullpen. Pitching coach Rich Dubee said Stutes had a little inflammation in his arm and he is really not worried about it. I really hope this is nothing to worry about because the Phillies really don’t have a lot of great pitchers coming out of the bullpen other than closer Jonathan Papelbon, so losing Michael Stutes who is likely going to be the seventh inning guy would be a major loss.

Freddy Galvis who fouled a ball of his foot earlier in the week is still day-to-day on his return to the diamond, Galvis is going to be the starting second basemen for the Phillies in Chase Utley’s absence.

Phillies must decide by tomorrow by noon if they want to keep Juan Pierre or get rid of him, I choose the second option.

Phillies next spring training game is tomorrow at 7:05 Pm Eastern time against the New York Yankees.

We are just one week away from opening day for the Phillies in Pittsburgh.

GameDay Preview: Phillies vs Tampa Bay Rays

The Philadelphia Phillies play the Tampa Bay Rays today in another spring training game at Bright House Field in Clearwater Florida.

Cole Hamels will take the hill for the Phils today.

The Phillies just have a few games left to figure out the offense before the regular season begins, the offense has been productive at times but at other times they have been shutout. With the absence of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley the first couple of months the offense is going to struggle unless someone like a Hunter Pence or a Jimmy Rollins has a breakout first couple of months, which is what I hope can happen.

The problem with both Utley’s and Howard’s injuries are we really don’t have timetable on them, they could be back in a month or could be out most of the year, the Phillies really have no clue at all.

Phillies Lineup

1. Pete Orr SS

2. Placido Polanco 3B

3. Hunter Pence RF

4. Jim Thome 1B

5. Shane Victorino CF

6. Laynce Nix LF

7. Ty Wigginton 2B

8. Brain Schneider C

9. Cole Hamels P

Game Story and Other Notes From Today’s Phillies 11-7 Lose

Vance Worley who will start the third game of the regular season in Pittsburgh a week from Sunday took the hill today against the Minnesota Twins. Worley got hit early just like in his last performance, Worley allowed a leadoff double to Joe Mauer and then the next batter was Justin Morneau and he crushed a two run home run. Twins would add two more runs in the bottom of the second off of an error on Worley and a sacrifice fly.

Twins would have a seven run bottom of the fourth inning.

It was safe to say Vance Worley did not have a good day, Worley pitched four innings today and allowed 6 earned runs off of 11 hits.

Hopefully Vance Worley can get these bad days out the way and not have these type of games during the regular season.

Raul Valdez and David Herndon both worked out of the pen today and did not allow anymore runs.

The Phillies would finally get some offense going in the top of the third when ShortStop Jimmy Rollins got a RBI single, Phillies would get the bases loaded with one out but could not capitalise on it. The Phillies have had so many opportunities this spring just like this and have failed to capitalise, this is really starting to worry me. You can’t just keep stranding all of these runners in the regular season or we are not going to win ball games.

Phillies would keep eating away at the Twins lead the rest of the game but would eventually run out of innings, Phillies would score a total of seven runs off of 15 hits today, in fact the Phillies had more hits then the Twins today. They just need to convert the hits into runs.

Some Other Notes

Jose Contreras pitched in a minor league game today, he pitched one inning and he gave up one run off of two hits.

Right before todays spring training game the Phillies announced they have signed veteran Infielder Joe Thurston to minor league deal. He is headed to minor league camp.

I know this is still spring training but this Phillies offense is about a code 5 on the worry scale. The Phillies pitching this season might have to pitch scoreless games every night for the team to even have a chance to win the game.

Phillies next spring training game is tomorrow against the Tampa Bay Rays in Clearwater Florida, Cole Hamels will be the starter and will make is final start of spring training.

We are just eight days away from opening day for the Phillies in Pittsburgh.

Gameday Preview: Phillies vs Minnesota Twins

The Philadelphia Phillies play the Minnesota Twins today in another spring training matchup at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers Florida

The Phillies actually got their offense kick started yesterday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Phillies got out to a 4-0 lead and Cliff Lee would shut down the Pirates hitting threw seven innings. Phillies relief pitchers Antonio Bastardo and Micahel Stutes both had some trouble in the bottom of the eighth inning when they blew the lead and the Pirates would tie it up. Scott Podesdnik hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Phillies to give them the win, Podsednik is fighting Juan Pierre for a roster spot.

We are just eight days away from opening day and only have a few spring training games left.

Phillies Lineup

2. Carlos Ruiz C
